About Sweetmama Editor

Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.

Sweetmamas We Love: Redneck Mommy

canada (Dec.01.08)

I know a lot of Sweetmamas. Everyday heroes that spend their days wiping teary eyes, ketchup-stained mouths and poopy bums; raising citizens of the future on two hours of sleep and somehow managing to be fabulous amidst it all.

Mom bloggers are easily some of the sweetest mamas around. I know so many people don't get this blog stuff, or think that it's just a trend that will pass (like playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? in computer lab). But moms online are changing the way people view mothers and motherhood. They are advocates and activists, taking on governments and companies when things need shaking up. Their message is both personal and powerful and I can't stop reading them compulsively.

One of my favourite mom bloggers is Tanis a.k.a. The Redneck Mommy. If you're just dabbling in mom blogs for the first time, I highly recommend Attack of the Redneck Mommy -- though it's not for the faint of heart. I know, I know... you're thinking how could someone who considers herself a "redneck" be a Sweetmama?

Tanis may live in Alberta, own guns and use four-letter-words like some people use sweetener (which is probably why I like her so much), but she's also raised three kids, survived great tragedy, and is now very close to adopting a child with special needs. Throughout all she manages to find and share her hilarious sense of humour. I met her in person this summer and despite her blog voice being rough around the edges, she instantly gave me the warm fuzzies.

Last week, I went back and forth to this post several times over the course of the day, because I kept welling up at the office. It describes the incredible journey that brought Tanis to where she is today and it's a good place to start if you've never visited her site. And with the holidays basically here (OMG it's the first already!) this entry about making a gingerbread house with her kids gives you a good sample of why she wins all kinds of awards for blogging, and why a good chunk of the internet (male and female) has a huge crush on her. Enjoy!
