About Nadine Silverthorne

Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.

Inside The Fishbowl

blogs we love canada (Feb.23.09)

I was debating about writing a recap of the Oscars today, but Stephania already echoed my thoughts on her Sweetspot blog (except for the watching them at a hip charity event part -- because I was at home in my jammies, of course.) After spending an evening wondering which celeb moms were wearing Spanx or had run to Dr. 90210 for a quick "mom-job" (because really, can they stop making us feel bad after only giving birth months earlier?) I thought I'd spend today focusing on real life mama role models.

Often, our favourite blogs are the ones that transport us to a life that is different than our own. There are some I read because the mom writes heart-achingly about tragedy, some because the author is so much more honest and forthright than I am, and others because the author's life strikes a chord with me as something I'd like to aspire to.

This is how I feel about A Peek Inside the Fishbowl. I had the great pleasure of spending a few days with Andrea in Florida last fall, touring DisneyWorld. Sweetmama doesn't have an Ottawa edition, but if you live in Ottawa, Andrea's blog is a great resource for parents. Her portrait of life as a Stay-at-Home/Work-at-Home Mom makes me aspire to be more crafty, more positive and more present for my kids.

Whether it's concocting a from-scratch granola bar recipe , or making the cutest valentines on the planet, I love the kind of simple, every day magic Andrea creates for her two girls. A few summers ago, she sent off a message in a bottle with her daughters, only to have someone find it and respond to it. Best of all she's created a kind of road map to fun parenting, so that any parent (even ones who have few original ideas of things to do with her kids like yours truly) canlearn how to incorporate her easy suggestions to make life more enjoyable for everyone.

Happy reading!
