Well I've gone and jinxed myself by talking about my love of labels. This past week, the big hairy recession of 2009 landed on my doorstep. My husband, a faithful contract employee of our nation's broadcaster, was informed that he shouldn't expect a lot of shifts over the next little while.
While not an official lay-off (yet), we're still immediately impacted as our household income drops by 40-50 per cent. I've had to make cuts in the places it hurts most -- the little things I love for myself. We had to let our amazing cleaning lady go. While my roots are gleaming silver under my signature black tresses, I haven't called my beloved hairdresser. Instead I've been trying to psych myself up to go to the drugstore and browse the latest in home hair dyes. I did have one last sugaring treatment at my favourite salon, but when asked to rebook I made an excuse about having to check my calendar. (Hello razor! My husband better get used to stubbly legs.)
I figure a lot of Sweetmamas are going through similarly uncomfortable times right now. And the thing about not having money is that no one really wants to talk about it. But how do we stay sweet when our worlds turn sour?
I'll be documenting my journey through trying to save money here on Mondays and I'll do my best to make the tough choices funny. Think about it: Glam mama clipping coupons and doing her own floors (not to mention her own nails!) -- there's got to be humour in there somewhere right?
