About Sweetmama Editor

Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Adventures in Potty-Training

potty tales canada (Jun.22.09)

I never thought I’d have two kids in diapers. But here I am with a 4.5 year-old boy in Pull-Ups® pants at night, and an almost-two-year-old girl, who has just started to say “Poo-poo” after every Number 1 or Number 2. For the most part, modern day diapers with their super absorption have been a blessing (I don’t have a laundry fairy, do you?). I’m just tired of wiping other people’s butts and I kind of want to be done with diapers already.
“You and your sister were both trained by your first birt-days,” my mom often admonishes in her thick Armenian-Canadian accent. I have pictures of her training camp: Our cute baby selves parked on our potties in front of the TV. You weren’t allowed to get up until you peed. I still can’t watch certain classic kids’ shows without getting the urge.
I have read all the info on elimination communication, and while I’m certain that it works great for some people (like my mother and all the women who came before her), I’m just not the type to hold my babies privates under a sink while I make pee-pee sounds.
I have tried the other popular methods suggested:
  • Putting your child in underwear and letting him soil himself until he gets it;
  • Letting your child run around bottomless in Grandma’s backyard until he soils himself and gets it;
  • Cloth diapers (which I love the idea of, but can’t seem to commit to using past the first messy poop).
Unfortunately, all of these options require more laundry than I can bear to do with a full-time job and two kids under five. When Pull-Ups® brand approached me with an offer to document my potty training adventures with my daughter, I was interested. When they offered to provide me with Pull-Ups® training pants throughout the process, well, they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

So here I am, about to wade into potty training for the second time and none the wiser. (Seriously, daycare potty trained my first child – but that’s another blog post.) I hope you’ll join me each week as I bear it all, ask the experts on best practices, and find the humour in things that go flush in the night. If you have any suggestions for me, I would love to hear them. Log in and leave me a comment below!

I am sure they will hate me for this when they're older
