About Sweetmama Editor
Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.
So since my blog post last week, we’ve had some progress. Lucy has finally stopped crying once I try to sit her on the potty. I made her big brother sit on it to show her that it’s not scary. I made her favourite
Blabla doll sit on it to show her that it’s not scary. We have now established that it’s not scary.
We have actually moved from fear to the next awesome stage. Sitting on the potty, letting a dribble come out and then JUMPING UP with excitement, pointing at the dribble and then continuing to pee... right BESIDE the potty. It’s all just too exciting for words. (Remind me why I signed up for this again?) The good thing is that the other 90% of the time when she’s not peeing on my floor, her accidents are being caught in her trusty pink Princess Pull-Ups® pants, saving my bathroom tiles and my brain.
I will admit that our potty is an old hand-me-down, the original users of which are now in their teens. It has that 1990s look to it (teal and yellow and hot pink) and I’m vain enough to want a new one (any excuse to shop!). I’m wondering if we can get one that just fits on our own toilet. I know that Kohler (our toilet brand) makes an
all-in-one seat that flips up easily for grown-ups. We also wrote about a
Calgary company recently that sells a similar product. But what are all the options? And can my little girl manage to get up on the big toilet easily at this age?
So I did what I do best – I asked someone who has the answers. Karen Judd of
Moms to Be... and More in Toronto has the Great Wall of Potties in her store. I know this because I go there often to drool at her incredible selection of toys, strollers, clothing and just about every accessory a mom could dream of. (Plus
Hollywood Gelato is across the street...)
Karen filled me in on a multi-step formula to getting Lucy potty trained. Watch this short video of Karen (I don’t know about you, but I need visuals) showing me different potties and explaining which stages they cover. Super helpful and if you're just venturing into this crazy world of potty training, I think you will find some useful tips here.
The other thing I really found interesting was how the
Baby Bjorn potty has a shape that causes the muscles around the bladder to relax. My current potty has no such thing. Perhaps the next step is to procure a cute potty. I really like the look of the
Boon potty. It even has a side compartment for toilet paper and then the lid comes down to make a step stool for washing hands. Let me introduce it to her and I’ll let you know if that helps.
Do you have a favourite potty? What's worked/working for you? Let me know in the comments below.
