Now that our kids are getting older, we’re wondering, should we start giving them an allowance? How much? When? So we asked our readers on Facebook and this is what we found:
My kids are too young for an official allowance (1.5 and 3) but they get paid for little jobs around the house! Put your dishes in the dishwasher get a penny, help bring in the garbage cans, earn a quarter. They both get SO excited about depositing their coins in their piggy banks :) – Amber Gordon
I don't like the idea of tying money to "chores", because they then have the option of saying they don't want to do the job if they don't want the money. I think giving an allowance is great and if they want to do extra jobs for extra money then that's fine too. – Jennifer Hamilton
As a kid I'd get five dollars a week, but I had to help out with chores (like doing the dishes). If I took on bigger chores like raking the leaves, I'd get a little extra. – Jes Watson
My allowance started at $1/week and never exceeded $10/week. It wasn't tied to chores as those were just expected, and it stopped when I hit middle school and got a part-time job. – Emma Yardley
My girls are really responsible with money. They are currently saving their money for a trip to Great Wolf Lodge. They sometimes even buy me coffee. Now that I think about it, I might ask them for an allowance! – Jana Cleland
We're not there yet (kids are 4 and 6), but they have a "Tick Mark Chart" and if they earn enough tick marks for doing certain chores, they can redeem for a reward (usually comic books).– Nadine Silverthorne
