Today is a very special day for me. My second book in my teen series, Apple’s Angst, is officially being released. (The first in the series is called Rotten Apple.) It’s a thrill to have another book come out!
Now I’m not going to tell you to GO TO
AMAZON.CA, or to your local
CHAPTERS.CA to buy
Apple’s Angst – thereby supporting the publishing industry as a whole as well as supporting me. I’m not going to tell you what a fun read
Apple’s Angst is for pre-teens — and immature adults like me. (OK, I did just tell you all of that, however, that is NOT the point of this blog.)
My friends, I’m here to tell you that times have changed.
In the good old days (circa 2005) when my first book
Knocked Up came out, I had a great publicist who works at Random House (which is also releasing
Apple’s Angst).
He was Super Publicist (and still is). He booked me on numerous TV shows, got me interviews in magazines and newspapers, and escorted me around to bookstores for signings (sometimes even in a chauffeured town car!). I had a great party to celebrate Knocked Up and many photographers showed up, all thanks to Super Publicist. (I heart you Scott!)
But, if you can believe it, that was before the time of blogs and Twitter and Facebook and, yes my friends, while I still have a great publicist at Random House, I now have two NEW publicists who are 20 years younger than me. Yes, TWENTY YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME.
The publicists I hired are 15-year-old girls. Because 15-year-old girls have hundreds of friends on Facebook and can make web pages in the time it takes me to boil water for tea.
I offered each of them $200 (which, luckily, is still A LOT of money for a fifteen-year-old) to Facebook/tweet the crap and make web pages for Apple’s Angst, to spread the word about the release of the book.
I so love that I came up with this idea. First, these girls are way more tech savvy than I am. Second, I gave them jobs, which may one day branch out into other jobs. (And quite frankly is more fun and pays more than babysitting.) Third, I love teenage girls. Especially these two girls, who seem so put together it’s insane.
These days you no longer have to worry about your boss being a few years younger. These days, my “employees” don’t even know how to drive yet. I find this completely fascinating.
(Still, please go buy
Apple’s Angst. And follow me on twitter
@rebeccaeckler. See, I’m cool too!)
