We recall cutting up old pillowcases and haphazardly sewing them together to make clothes for our Cabbage Patch Doll in our tweens. (Didn't all fashion forward women get their start rummaging through Mom's closet and sewing box?)
Now we can give our own creative creatures a structured way to develop their Project Runway dreams, by enrolling them in fashion camps, courses and workshops ($225 and up) at Sew Be It Girl. This Ave and Eg studio teaches our future Von Furstenbergs (tweens aged 8-13 and teens 14+) the skills to craft everything from simple tote bags to PJ pants, twirly skirts and dramatic capes. Set up like a mini-atelier, the girls get their chops at real pattern drafting tables and sewing machine stations (they even use the serger!).
Owner Lindsey Wise opened this little sister to grown-up space Sew Be It Studio to provide a safe and positive space for young girls. The response has been so overwhelming that Wise is devising machine-free course for pre-tweens (6-7) to get in on the fashion education, embellishing tees and the like.
We're investing in our girls now so we can reap the rewards later in custom party frocks.
