We’re the first to admit that we didn’t properly prepare our firstborn – a Schnauzer-Poodle mix – for the birth of her “sibling.” (Those first few months, we swore the baby and dog were competing to see who could mark more territory with bodily fluids.)
Fortunately, you can avoid our rookie mistake by checking out Babies and Dogs ($75), a three-week workshop (May 17-31, one hour a week) offered by It’s a Dog’s Life. Designed to help parents-to-be and their dogs get ready for the big changes a baby brings to the household, the course offers dogs a glimpse of life after baby and shows parents tips and tools to manage when things get hairy at home.
If you’re past the point of no return and your older kids need some tips on how to be a respectful “master,” It's a Dog's Life also offers Kids & Dogs ($50), a two-hour course for the whole family May 17. Perfect for kids who are frightened of dogs and those who have a little too much confidence, this course teaches little ones how to approach, pet and interact with dogs in a fun and interactive way.
Trust us, the more you know, the easier (and cleaner) the transition will be from one “kid” to two.
