Sure, those ruffled dresses and fancy overalls are a sweet way to welcome newborns home. But when we're looking for gifts that are practical, locally and ethically produced, all while serving a philanthropic cause, we could end our search empty handed. Luckily, we've found a gift idea that fits the bill.
L'Assistance maternelle
is a non-profit organization launched in 1912 with the mission to support mothers in need. The organization recently launched its first ever collection of kits for newborns ($25-$35) -- perfect for that last-minute ride-to-the-hospital welcome.
Produced in Montreal, 100 per cent of profits from the sale of each kit will be reinvested into L’Assistance maternelle’s programs. Every year, L'Assistance maternelle distributes over 1,500 newborn kits to mothers in Quebec who are referred by hospitals, CLSCs and other organizations that welcome immigrants to the province.
Three kits are currently available: Bon dodo (pyjama and bonnet), Bon bain (towel, cloth glove and Fruits et Passion balm), and Bon jour (two covers and slippers). Each kit even comes in a lovely fabric envelope, making new baby gifts less labour intensive (sorry, we couldn’t resist a pun).
Painless, feel-good gift-giving at its finest – almost as life-changing as that epidural we had.
