I used to be really into fashion, but ever since I had kids, I feel like I can't wear anything trendy! What can I wear this spring that's fashionable but practical?
Brenda J. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and fashion expert (and Mom!) Michelle Germain, answered;
It’s often difficult to keep up with fashion trends when you can barely keep up with your three-year-old. I am now well into my second pregnancy and refuse to succumb to the “I give up” mom style, especially when I see what’s hot for spring this year.
Most female bodies change after childbirth, sometimes for the better but not often. That being said, there are ways for us to look effortlessly chic without giving up comfort. Here are some quick style trends that are easy to put together.
- Vivid colours and prints: A splash of colour will go a long way, not only in how you look but especially how you feel. Colour or prints are easy to incorporate, whether you want to go bold with a printed dress or ease into it with a colourful scarf or accessory. Say goodbye to the winter blues and embrace some new spring hues!
- Shoes: Just because you’re a mom, doesn’t mean you have to give up on sexy altogether. While flats remain a strong fashion trend for spring, moms can also gain some height and show off their calves with wedges or platforms. I have to admit, I have given up the spike heel and admire those who still can bear them! I tack on some extra inches without giving up comfort or flexibility with this season's wedges. Thankfully, no balancing required.
- Layers: With the arrival of our offspring, many of us also inherit some new lumps and bumps that were not there before, this is why layering is oh so wonderful. You can show off your best assets while masking those less lovely bits. Add a long flowing vest or cardigan to your wardrobe and you will quadruple your closet by wearing pieces you may feel were not so flattering on their own.
