We admit we were a tad freaked out as moms-to-be when we saw a Degrassi episode about a certain trend with bracelets. What kind of kids would we be raising? What kind of world were we about to bring children into?
While we don’t have all the answers, we do feel good about dakbands. Created by Canadian moms, these gel bracelets ($5 for package of eight/four pairs) offer an ingenious way to reward deliberate acts of kindness (hence the “dak” in the name).
We start by registering our kids’ bands and placing at least one pair on their right wrist. Then, when they see someone doing something kind, they pass off a pair of their dakbands to the do-gooder, to wear on their left wrist. That person is then instructed to pay it forward, handing off one of their pair to another kind soul. And the best part is tracking our bands as they make their way around the world.
It’s something we can all get behind and it makes us feel better about how our kids are growing up. Kids and teens grasp the concept easily and we think any method of rewarding good behaviour that doesn’t involve sugary treats or expensive toys is a bonus.
