SweetMama We Love: Sarah Richardson
Hometown: Toronto
Mom to: two busy (and adorable) little girls, age 1 and 3.
Also known as: Canada's home decor queen, TV host and owner of Sarah Richardson Design, and spokesperson for Green Works Canada

We've drooled as we watched her decorate other people's houses. And then totally gut a house and sell it for a LOT of money. And then there was her COTTAGE! OK, so she's fabulous. But we wanted to know the real deal behind this busy mom of two. Not surprisingly, her answers were well put together and squeaky clean (no dirt here folks!).

SM: What’s your secret to raising them fabulous?
I want them to be independent, happy kids. I set boundaries and believe in good behaviour. I believe in filling them up with love and support, and at the same time I want them to be polite, considerate members of society. Kids need balance and consistency, and a team effort in parenting. My husband and I work together as a united front.

SM: What’s been your biggest challenge in balancing motherhood and the other parts of yourself (work, writing, etc.)?
I would love to be around for more daytime activities, but that's not a reality for me. When I'm home I'm strictly with the kids, and when I'm at work, I'm focused. Since I divide my time between my businesses and my family it means that there isn't enough time for friends, but since most of us have young kids I know that it's just a stage. I want to spend as much time with my kids as possible while they want me around!

SM: Knowing what you know now, what’s the one thing you wish you could tell all new moms or moms-to-be?

I'm lucky and never had to look back and wish I'd done it different (so far). But I will say that it's possible to have a life, and get a good night sleep, even with 2 little ones. Don't let a baby rule your life - you need to train your kids to sleep well. These are patterns you are creating for the rest of their life, so make sure you are giving them the best possible foundation. Shower them with love, but don't overindulge them.

What is the one item you can’t live without for yourself?

Right now it's a pair of fab Michael Kors heels. If I have an evening event I usually need to transform as fast as Wonder Woman (without the phone booth), so a great dress and some sassy shoes are my recipe for a quick turnaround.

What is the one item you can’t live without for your children?

With a messy one year old (who loves smushing blackberries and raspberries all over herself at every meal) and a three year old who changes her clothes up to five times a day, I'm loving the new Green Works natural laundry detergent. It allows me to bring a little green into my home while keeping everyone looking clean...and that's a challenge for every working mother!
