SweetMama We Love: Hina Khan
Hometown: Toronto, Ontario
Mom to: Yusef Sar Silva, age 2
Also known as: Relationship Strategist on W Network's Save Us From Our House, therapist and the mom entrepreneur behind www.goodhairdayz.com
SM: Tell us a bit about your career.
My career began in television where I hosted, produced and directed various programs. I really enjoyed connecting with people and hearing their stories, and that “pull” led me to pursue my training in psychotherapy. I currently have a private practice in Toronto. There is also a part of me that enjoys the business world and I am able to express that through Good Hair Dayz (a line of satin pillowcases I developed the same year I had my son).
My career has evolved and changed over the years as I have. When I first embarked on my therapy training I never thought I would use it in combination with my television work, and then Save Us from Our House entered the picture and I was able to combine both my passions!
SM: What’s your secret to raising them fabulous?
Parenting is like a dance; at times I try to be a couple of steps ahead, other times I am following my son’s lead. Either way my goal is to remain present and to not have too many missteps along the way.
SM: What’s been your biggest challenge in balancing motherhood and the other parts of yourself (work, writing, etc.)?
When my son was born I thought I would never know “balance” again, I thought it was something of my distant past which I would have to grieve. But once I got some sleep I realized that I can have balance, but it will look different at different times. When Yusef was a newborn having a shower was a way to get some balance and now that he is two I feel balanced and centered with consistent yoga classes.
SM: Knowing what you know now, what’s the one thing you wish you could tell all new moms or moms-to-be?
You know your child best and trust in that. When you are receiving a lot of well-intentioned advice but it doesn’t feel right for you, trust your instincts.
What is the one item you can’t live without for yourself?
 |
My satin pillowcases (right now I’m sleeping on Sophia’s chocolate brown). With time being at a premium having a “do” that will last a little longer makes all the difference!

What is the one item you can’t live without for your children?
 |
The Early Years Centres, this is a great place for parents to connect and kids to play. They have been a saviour (especially on those frigid days)!
