Yes Day!, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld
We say no, us parent types. We say no a lot. We need to, of course, it’s our job. We need to teach limits, yada yada. I agree. I’m on it, too. But how about if one day – one day – we say yes? To every silly, un-routine, unhealthy request? Would it really kill them to eat nothing but ice cream and sprinkles for just the one day?
That’s the premise of this book – it’s the one day of the year when the answer is always yes. The unnamed boy is, for obvious reasons, really excited from the moment he opens his eyes until he finally collapses after staying up late, jacked up on sugar, freedom, and unbridled fun.
The book captures it well, making it appealing and non-frightening for both parent and child. None of the requests are so big that the parents would really have pause before granting them. And as the comic-style illustration shows us what he’s up to, we are seeing that the parents seem to be having as much fun as the kid.
I am, frankly, a little inspired by this to try it. (But as with so many things in parenting, timing may be everything – I’m thinking next summer, when mess can be made outside and time is not so of the essence?) Of course, once they read it, your kids will be wanting to, too!
