About The Book Fairy

A career Children’s Librarian, the Book Fairy (a.k.a. kittenpie) has worked in library systems in both New York and Toronto. She’s thrilled to have another place to share the books she loves without creeping people out the way she does at the bookstore.

Sweet Little Stories of Love

shelf candy canada (Feb.09.10)

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better time to read a story that is a little love song? Here's a pair of stories to share with you own little love.

Henry in Love, by Peter McCarty

Henry's day starts out with the smell of blueberry muffins. He heads to school, where he will see Chloe, the loveliest girl in class. At lunch, he manages to gather the courage to go and show her a trick, a forward roll. And she? Turns a cartwheel in return!

As if that wasn't good enough, Chloe sits with him at snack, and he gives her his blueberry muffin. That, my friends, is true love, right there. After all, it meant he ended up with her carrot.

A sweet and un-gooey look at a first crush, this book features McCarty's unusual, spare artwork, and a writing style that is just as refreshingly lean.

Sugar Cookies: Sweet little Lessons on Love
, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, ill. Jane  & Brooke Dyer

It's no secret around here that I love Amy K Rosenthal and her Cookies books. They are sweet, gorgeous, and informative, explaining some very important but difficult to define concepts.

This new addition looks at words related to love. Words like forgive, supportive, and cherish. She uses cookies to creates small analogies for each: Unconditionally means that even when you mess up the cookies, my love for you doesn't change one single bit.

Jane Dyer's lovely watercolours make this even more wonderful, with lots of illustrations for parents and children or pairs of children sharing the joy of cookies. And who doesn't understand the love of cookies?

Take a little taste test of this book! Watch the sweet trailer, here.

Extra Sweetness!

I have one copy of Sugar Cookies to give away!

Tell me (in the comments) what you are planning for Valentine's Day with your child, and this lovely little book could be yours. Sah-weeet! (
