The Book Fairy

About The Book Fairy

A career Children’s Librarian, the Book Fairy (a.k.a. kittenpie) has worked in library systems in both New York and Toronto. She’s thrilled to have another place to share the books she loves without creeping people out the way she does at the bookstore.

Snow Wonder

shelf candy canada (Feb.17.10)

With snow finally on the ground in Toronto, I am eager to share my love of snow crystals far and wide - these are pretty much guaranteed to fill you with wonder, too!

The Story of Snow
by Mark Cassino and Jon Nelson, PhD
Audience: curious kids aged 5 and up
Available: www.indigo.ca

Why it's sweet: This lovely melding of real photographs of crystals with simple illustrations explains the types of snow crystals and how they are formed, as well as giving tips for how to catch and view crystals on your own. It has also had starred reviews aplenty and was named an Outstanding Science Trade Book by the National Science Teachers' Association. I'm thinking they know what's what.

You can take a closer look at the crystals - and the inside of this gem of a book, too.

Snowflake Bentley
by Jacqueline Briggs Martin,
illustrated by  Mary Azarian

Audience: curious kids aged 4 and up
Available: www.indigo.ca

Why it's sweet:
One of my favourite books about snow, and the one that took my wonder at the crystals to a whole new level. This Caldecott-winner shows kids the value of curiosity and following a passion as it tells the story of the man who really discovered snowflakes as we know them.

What are some of your favourite snow-themed books?
