Classic stories are a time-tested way for illustrators to stretch their wings and really show what they can do. Here, the illustrator of my favourite version of Hush Little Baby takes on a favourite Hans Christian Andersen tale with stunning results.

Why It's Sweet:
Thumbelina is one of Andersen's more accessible stories for young children, one in which no one dies (though there is still kidnapping - stories for kids were different back then!). The real treat here, though, is the pairing with these new, gorgeous illustrations. Thumbelina lives in the natural world, and it is clearly the perfect playground for Long's paintbrush, as she lavishes attention on its details and revels in clear, rich colours.
