About The Book Fairy
A career Children’s Librarian, the Book Fairy (a.k.a. kittenpie) has worked in library systems in both New York and Toronto. She’s thrilled to have another place to share the books she loves without creeping people out the way she does at the bookstore.

We are excited and proud to introduce a new weekly blog column from The Book Fairy, a children's librarian who will be bringing you book recommendations and pairings from the trenches.
Fashionistas talk incessantly about clothes, car fanatics about the rides, film buffs about movies. Me? I can’t help but share my love of reading, rewarded with knowing I have hooked someone up with the perfect book. It’s why we librarians do what we do, and why we can’t help but recommend our favourite books to people we think would like them. It’s alchemy, chemistry, magic, when you get a good book and the right reader together.
It’s also why, when I am in a big bookstore and see parents and grandparents looking lost in the children’s section, I offer suggestions, even though I’m not at work. There is magic, too, in the sharing of great books with kids. The power of a great story to make a frenzied child sit still, to soothe an anxious young tot, or to bring the fun back into an evening going south is amazing. It is something I have relied on as a caregiver, a librarian, and a mother.
My passion is to connect kids with books they love, books that will open the door to the magic of reading something great, books that make parents and children love to share the joy of storytime together. I want them to have books they will remember and treasure, the way I have held on to my ancient, well-worn copies of Harold and the Purple Crayon and Where The Wild Things Are.
The trick is knowing what to pick, especially as there are more and more selections coming out each year. Which is where I come in. Because fairies? We are magic, too, so when we sprinkle some fairy dust on a book pick, you can bet it will tickle some child’s fancy… maybe yours.
