The Book Fairy

About The Book Fairy

A career Children’s Librarian, the Book Fairy (a.k.a. kittenpie) has worked in library systems in both New York and Toronto. She’s thrilled to have another place to share the books she loves without creeping people out the way she does at the bookstore.

Not Just Opposites Attract

A book of opposites, a book of sames. Two sides of one coin… sort of.

Hello, Goodbye by Arlene Alda
Alda’s book of opposites is terrific, featuring her charming photography, globe-spanning settings, and some very unusual pairings (I liked Make-Believe vs. Real) as well as a handful of more familiar ones. I love a good opposite book – they can be witty and discussion-starting, and they are great vocabulary builders, too.

Same Same by Marthe Jocelyn
Same Same, on the other hand, was not quite the book of synonyms I expected. Instead, it is a book on the concept of grouping by common traits – things, not words, that are the same in some way. This is an important concept, and one rarely seen in children’s lit, making it a good pick for a toddler or preschooler, with its simple, highly graphic images.

(Ed. Note: Both books are recommended for children aged 2-5 on the Tundra Books website.)

A career Children’s Librarian, the Book Fairy (a.k.a. kittenpie) has worked in library systems in both New York and Toronto, and delights in sharing favourite books with kids of all ages. Since she can’t help but force books on people, she’s thrilled to have another place to do it without creeping people out the way she does at the bookstore.
